An important element of coffee tasting is having the right tools to organize your thoughts and record them. In this article we provide you with two important tools.
Coffee Tasting Flavor Wheel
When you start to taste coffee, it can be hard to define what flavors you’re detecting in the cup. You know you’re tasting something , but you just can’t put your finger on it.
Our Flavor Wheel helps you concentrate on what you’re tasting and describe it. You can view it here (you’ll probably want to zoom in on it), or simply download it and print it out.
After you get some practice using the Flavor Wheel and developing your tasting memory, you may just find yourself slurping your coffee and coming up with creative ways to express what you’re tasting.
For instance, you may just find yourself exclaiming: “Incredible! This coffee is like a frosted cinnamon bun – it has a touch of spicy cinnamon, the sweet taste of vanilla, with a chewy body.”
Coffee Tasting Sheets
And to write down your impressions of the coffee you’re tasting, you can view or download our Coffee Tasting Sheets:
Now, when you look at those sheets you may ask yourself:
- What in the world are these tasting sheets talking about?
- How am I supposed to know what body is? How does coffee have a body?
- Can coffee be bright? What is it, a lightbulb?
